Canadian plumber wins World Poker Crown

12th May, 2008

A plumber from Canada has become a millionaire overnight after winning the 888.com World Poker Crown.

Jack Hinchey bagged a cool $1 million (£500,000) when he defeated fellow countryman Michael Lawson in a heads-up face-to-face battle in Peralada Castle, Spain.

"This is a lot better than being in a sewage pit!" Hinchley quipped after winning the flagship tournament.

He continued: "My strategy was to keep the pressure on everybody - I flubbed a few times in the middle but it worked out in the end. They call Michael an internet pro but I think he's proved to everybody here that he's a poker professional."

Some 2,214 players had parted ways with $1,050 to buy into the event, but the final poker table saw just eight players battle it out for their share of the $3 million total prize pool.

Second-place Lawson won $397,800 for his efforts. Following on from his defeat he said he was "pretty happy" but admitted that he had "a few regrets".

The final showdown will be broadcast today (May 12th) on Sky Sports 2 at 21:30 BST.
