German bags Party Poker Million title
14th May, 2008
A 25-year-old mathematics student has become the first German ever to win the Party Poker Million.
Online poker enthusiast Alexander Jung beat off competition from 171 other gamers to bag the first-place cash prize of $350,000 (£180,000).
The Berlin-native came up trumps following an intense heads-up battle against fellow poker enthusiast Dominik Stopka, with the duo battling it out on luxury cruise liner MSC Poesia.
Speaking after his victory - the biggest win of his poker career - Jung revealed his obvious delight at the result, describing the structure of the tournament as being "perfect for me".
"There were some very good players here," the German said. "I had a lot of respect for Dominik. I had seen him play a great many hands, mostly without a showdown and when he did have to show it was often something like aces, so he is a good player."
A Party Poker spokesman added: "Alexander Jung was the deserving winner in a week where German players truly dominated the tournament."
